Jack Eden (b.1989, UK) is an artist translating our understanding of materiality into the language of sculpture. Often shaped by mathematic principles including the golden ratio or Euclidean geometry, Eden’s sculptures focus on basic form to enhance the aesthetic, physical, and conceptual possibilities of materials.

About project Raamwerk:

Thought by Plato to be the elemental building blocks of our universe, the Platonic solids are a series of five three-dimensional shapes defined by unalterable mathematic relationships. Created in the first coronavirus lockdown of 2020, these sculptures illustrate the stability that mathematics represents in the face of precarious and mercurial notions of time, life, and work. Despite shifting realities, the Platonic solids remain constant, unchangeable, and irrefutable.

Expressing both solidity and fragility, each sculpture was created from commercial plasterboard – a more literal building block in the contemporary world – and in 2021, photographed against the chalkboards used to calculate their construction. The sculptures and photo series alike draw the absolute into the indefinite, depicting forms of theoretical perfection hewn in imperfect reality.

The four-sided tetrahedron (commonly known as a pyramid) represents elemental fire, created from one flat net of folded pink flame-retardant plasterboard.

The six-sided hexahedron (or cube) symbolises earth, the constituent element of the terrestrial world, smoothly mitred as an edgeless solid in green water-repellent plasterboard.

The eight-sided octahedron represents air, similarly constructed with precisely mitred seams to appear almost edgeless in standard white plasterboard.

The twelve-sided dodecahedron symbolises ether – the matter Aristotle believed constitutes our universe – sculpted from sheets of common brown plasterboard, all meeting at identical angles.

The twenty-sided icosahedron is near spherical and illustrates water – which Plato compared to the flow of a million tiny balls – formed from one long net of lavender-coloured plasterboard.

Door Plato beschouwd als de elementaire bouwstenen van ons universum, zijn de Platonische lichamen een reeks van vijf driedimensionale vormen die worden gedefinieerd door onveranderlijke wiskundige relaties. Deze sculpturen, gemaakt tijdens de eerste coronavirusvergrendeling van 2020, illustreren de stabiliteit die wiskunde vertegenwoordigt in het licht van precaire en mercuriale noties van tijd, leven en werk. Ondanks verschuivende werkelijkheden blijven de Platonische lichamen constant, onveranderlijk en onweerlegbaar.

Elke sculptuur, die zowel stevigheid als kwetsbaarheid uitdrukt, werd gemaakt van commerciële gipsplaat – een meer letterlijke bouwsteen in de hedendaagse wereld – en in 2021 gefotografeerd tegen de krijtborden die werden gebruikt om hun constructie te berekenen. Zowel de sculpturen als de fotoseries trekken het absolute naar het onbepaalde, en beelden vormen van theoretische perfectie uit die in de onvolmaakte werkelijkheid zijn uitgehouwen.

De vierzijdige tetraëder (algemeen bekend als een piramide) vertegenwoordigt elementair vuur, gemaakt van een plat net van gevouwen roze vlamvertragende gipsplaat.

De zeshoekige hexahedron (of kubus) symboliseert de aarde, het samenstellende element van de aardse wereld, soepel in verstek gezaagd als een randloze vaste stof in groene waterafstotende gipsplaat.

De achtzijdige octaëder staat voor lucht, op dezelfde manier geconstrueerd met nauwkeurig versteknaden om bijna randloos te lijken in standaard witte gipsplaat.

De twaalfzijdige dodecaëder symboliseert ether – de materie waarvan Aristoteles geloofde dat het ons universum vormt – gebeeldhouwd uit vellen gewone bruine gipsplaat, die allemaal onder identieke hoeken samenkomen.

De twintigzijdige icosaëder is bijna bolvormig en illustreert water – dat Plato vergeleek met de stroom van een miljoen kleine balletjes – gevormd uit één lang net van lavendelkleurige gipsplaat.
